Abstract: 

The goal of this study - development of the natural heritage atlas mapping methodical fundamentals with justification of approaches to areas of natural heritage (NH) mapping, which are implemented at the Institute of Geography of the Ukraine NAS based on the analysis and meaningful interpretation of the term “natural heritage”, study and summarizing of the international experience in thematic NH mapping. The criteria to be met by natural sites in order to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List has been defined. The system of protected areas and sites of Ukraine has been characterized. The importance of mapping methods in the natural heritage study has been highlighted, international and domestic experience in this field has been summarized. The novelty is the justification of methodological approaches to the Atlas of “Ukraine’s population and its natural and cultural heritage” creation launched at the Institute of Geography of the Ukraine NAS, its contents and structure.
