Abstract: 

The essence of the concept of space and the changes taking place in its understanding under the modern tendencies of society development are considered in the article. The main challenges for interpretation of category of “space”, as well as spatial development, which are marked in terminology and methodology of some sciences and interdisciplinary directions, are revealed. The approaches to definition of space and its types (geographical, social, economic), the points of contact and the conflicts that exist in this area are analyzed. The structuring of space by its types in accordance with their significance and meaning is developed. The importance of solution of spatial development issues and its optimization for the state and regions is proved.
