Abstract: 

A brief overview of the history and formation of the first urban settlements on the territory of modern Ukraine, particularly, along the northern coast of the Black Sea has been carried out. The influence of the ancient Greek city-states with their rural settlements on economic and territorial development of the above-mentioned territories and neighboring lands has been analyzed. Based on research of the written sources four centers, where there was a formation of the settlement network, and the major factors which contributed to the emergence of the settlement network on the Black Sea northern coast have been identified. The stages of the Northern Black Sea coast colonization by Greeks have been shown. The study of the historical stages in the settlement network formation is very important for the research of their modern state and for scientifically-based forecast of these processes.
