Abstract: 

Importance of the two neighboring countries’ border area research is caused by the need to find the ways of cooperation between the states, which until 1991 had been a single political and economic space. The peculiarities of Atlas Information System (AIS) as an information source for such cooperation are set out considering the analysis of the factors determining the interaction conditions in the border areas (institutional, economic, ecological, geographical, etc.). The article presents the approximate thematic structure of the AIS, consisting of two blocks of thematic maps: «The geographical characteristics and potential of the regions» and «Borderline interaction and cooperation.» The goal of the proposed maps creation principles and approaches is to identify the sources of cooperation and directions of their use; explore the spatial relationships that exist in the borderlands, and identify directions of possible cooperation areas.
