Abstract: 

The main characteristics of scientific research and development complex in Japan as a base for the knowledge economy for- mation in the country has been reviewed. The interaction between corporate capital and government institutions in the financ- ing and management of scientific research, the level of research intensity in leading industries, the territorial organization of the research complex, the growth of the Japanese scientific product (patents, licenses, etc.) and its approval in the world market of science has been consistently analyzed.
