Abstract:

Capital cities are a specific urban category which stand apart neither due to their morphology nor their size, but mainly due to granting them special status connected with their spatial functions. Only they, within certain territory, maintain special relationships with the local government. The state capital is at the intersection of political and city geographies scientific interests. As a both historical and political geography related object, the capital city must be studied in its historical context, especially after emergence of Westphalian state model which is more and more put into question due to growing globalization. From geographical point of view capital cities should be studied in the context of finding the logic, which led to the power localization within the territory and the potential of realization such functions as administration, directly connected with politics, which determines their economic development.
