Abstract:

The aim of the paper is to show relations between road traffic and soil contaminations along 6 road corridors located in Poland. The corridors for the research are national roads, expressways and motorways characterized by different traffic intensity. We investigated samples along transects perpendicular to road axes, at locations situated from 1 to 100 meters away from the edge of the road, from the surface layer (horizon O/A) and at a depth of 30 cm (horizon B). In terms of soil quality, lower content of heavy metals in organic and mineral horizons was observed in the vicinity of the motorways and expressway comparing to areas surrounding local roads. Particularly high level of soil contamination was observed at border crossings, due to queues of trucks.
