Abstract:

The study develops and tests the methodological approaches to the metropolitan areas’ composition and boundaries determination. The article reveals the differences between the processes of metropolisation and regionalisation and describes the key features of the metropolitan cities. Metropolitan areas are highly integrated social and territorial complexes formed by the metropolitan cities and the territories under their direct influence. Here, not the metropolitan city itself, but rather the whole metropolitan area carries out the realization of the metropolitan functions. The article demonstrates the differences between a city agglomeration and a metropolitan area. It is determined that the city agglomerations were formed and undergone the initial stages of development mostly during the industrial era. City agglomerations’ further transformation into the metropolitan areas takes place on the suburbanization stage when the core passes on a share of its functions (including metropolitan ones) to its suburb. However, to obtain a status of metropolitan area, a city agglomeration has to possess the necessary potential and prerequisites. The functional approach based on the substantial links between a metropolitan city and the territories under its direct influence lies at the foundation of the Kyiv metropolitan area composition and boundaries determination. The key criterion for the boundaries’ determination is the accessibility and linkage level between a metropolitan city and surrounding territory that transforms due to the transportation network improvement and rapid transport introduction. Thus, the metropolitan area boundaries are vague and variable. It is determined that while merging with its suburban area, a city widens its real boundaries and forms the integral functional core of a metropolitan area. Modern remote sensing techniques allow to study these processes. The further development of the Kyiv metropolitan area depends on the opportunities of its institutionalization, coordination and mutually beneficial solutions to the challenges common for Kyiv and its suburb arising in the process of the metropolitan area functioning.
